Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 6 cups Rice Chex or Corn Chex cereal
- 1 cup toasted shredded coconut
- 3/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt (optional)
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup caramel sauce or melted caramels
Instructions
- Toast the Coconut: In a dry skillet over medium heat, toast the shredded coconut, stirring constantly, until golden brown and fragrant, about 3–5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool completely.
- Melt Chocolate and Caramel: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and caramel sauce. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well between each, until the mixture is fully melted and smooth, approximately 1–2 minutes total.
- Coat the Cereal: Place the Chex cereal in a large mixing bowl. Pour the melted chocolate and caramel mixture over the cereal. Gently stir until every piece is evenly coated with the chocolate-caramel blend.
- Add Coconut and Powdered Sugar: Sprinkle the toasted shredded coconut, powdered sugar, and sea salt (if using) into the bowl with the coated cereal. Toss thoroughly to ensure each piece is evenly coated and dusted.
- Set the Mixture: Spread the coated cereal mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet in an even layer. Allow it to cool and set for 15–20 minutes at room temperature or refrigerate briefly to speed up the setting process.
- Store or Serve: Once the mixture is fully cooled and set, transfer it to an airtight container for storage or serve immediately for a crunchy, sweet snack.
Notes
- Toast the shredded coconut carefully to prevent burning and ensure even browning.
- Use semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips for a rich flavor; milk chocolate can be substituted if preferred.
- Caramel sauce can be homemade or store-bought melted caramels.
- Refrigeration helps the coating set faster but is optional.
- Store the puppy chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days for best freshness.
