Description

Samoas Puppy Chow is a delicious, easy-to-make snack combining crunchy Chex cereal coated in a rich blend of melted chocolate and caramel, toasted shredded coconut, and a light dusting of powdered sugar. This sweet treat is inspired by the flavors of Samoas cookies and makes a perfect party snack or dessert to enjoy any time.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 6 cups Rice Chex or Corn Chex cereal
  • 1 cup toasted shredded coconut
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt (optional)

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce or melted caramels

Instructions

  1. Toast the Coconut: In a dry skillet over medium heat, toast the shredded coconut, stirring constantly, until golden brown and fragrant, about 3–5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool completely.
  2. Melt Chocolate and Caramel: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and caramel sauce. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well between each, until the mixture is fully melted and smooth, approximately 1–2 minutes total.
  3. Coat the Cereal: Place the Chex cereal in a large mixing bowl. Pour the melted chocolate and caramel mixture over the cereal. Gently stir until every piece is evenly coated with the chocolate-caramel blend.
  4. Add Coconut and Powdered Sugar: Sprinkle the toasted shredded coconut, powdered sugar, and sea salt (if using) into the bowl with the coated cereal. Toss thoroughly to ensure each piece is evenly coated and dusted.
  5. Set the Mixture: Spread the coated cereal mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet in an even layer. Allow it to cool and set for 15–20 minutes at room temperature or refrigerate briefly to speed up the setting process.
  6. Store or Serve: Once the mixture is fully cooled and set, transfer it to an airtight container for storage or serve immediately for a crunchy, sweet snack.

Notes

  • Toast the shredded coconut carefully to prevent burning and ensure even browning.
  • Use semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips for a rich flavor; milk chocolate can be substituted if preferred.
  • Caramel sauce can be homemade or store-bought melted caramels.
  • Refrigeration helps the coating set faster but is optional.
  • Store the puppy chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days for best freshness.
