Description

These Rich Brown Butter Dulce de Leche Rice Krispie Treats are a decadent twist on the classic dessert, combining nutty browned butter, sweet dulce de leche, and gooey marshmallows for an irresistible chewy and crispy treat. Finished with a drizzle of dulce de leche and optional flaky sea salt for extra flavor contrast, these treats are perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth or impressing guests with a unique homemade dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Butter Mixture

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp salt

Marshmallow & Dulce de Leche

  • 1 (16 oz) bag mini marshmallows (reserve 2 cups)
  • ½ cup dulce de leche, plus more for drizzling

Cereal

  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal

Optional Topping

  • Flaky sea salt for topping

Instructions

  1. Prep the Pan: Line a 9×13-inch baking dish with parchment paper and lightly grease it to ensure the treats do not stick and come out easily once set.
  2. Brown the Butter: In a large pot over medium heat, melt the butter. Continue cooking for about 5 to 7 minutes until the butter foams and turns a rich brown color, releasing a nutty aroma. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
  3. Melt the Marshmallows: Lower the heat to medium-low. Stir in the vanilla extract and salt, then add all but 2 cups of the mini marshmallows. Stir gently until the marshmallows are fully melted and combined with the browned butter.
  4. Stir in Dulce de Leche: Add ½ cup of dulce de leche to the melted marshmallow mixture, stirring until it is fully incorporated for a smooth, caramel-flavored base.
  5. Add Cereal & Extra Marshmallows: Remove the pot from heat. Fold in the Rice Krispies cereal along with the reserved 2 cups of mini marshmallows, mixing until the cereal and marshmallows are evenly coated with the dulce de leche mixture.
  6. Press & Chill: Transfer the mixture into the prepared pan and gently press it down into an even layer using a spatula or your hands. Drizzle additional dulce de leche over the top and sprinkle with flaky sea salt if desired. Allow the treats to set and firm up before cutting into 16 squares.

Notes

  • Make sure to brown the butter carefully to avoid burning; it should have a nutty aroma and golden brown color.
  • Press the mixture firmly into the pan for compact, sturdy treats that hold their shape well.
  • Use parchment paper for easy removal and cleanup.
  • For a stronger dulce de leche flavor, drizzle extra on top just before the treats set.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days to maintain freshness.
