- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup vegetable shortening
- 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3-4 tablespoons heavy cream (or milk)
Instructions
- Beat Butter and Shortening: In a large mixing bowl, beat the unsalted butter and vegetable shortening together for 2-3 minutes until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy.
- Add Powdered Sugar Gradually: Slowly incorporate the powdered sugar into the butter mixture, adding about 1/4 cup at a time, and beating well after each addition to ensure an even blend without lumps.
- Mix in Vanilla and Salt: Add the vanilla extract and salt to the mixture and beat until fully combined and smooth.
- Adjust Consistency with Cream: Gradually add the heavy cream one tablespoon at a time, stirring after each addition until you achieve the desired thickness or softness according to your preference.
- Beat for Fluffiness: Continue to beat the buttercream for another 3-4 minutes until it becomes light, fluffy, and smooth, perfect for spreading or piping.
- Use or Store: Use the buttercream immediately to frost cakes, cupcakes, or cookies. Any leftovers should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator and used within one week.
Notes
- Sift the powdered sugar beforehand to avoid lumps in your buttercream.
- For a softer consistency, use milk instead of heavy cream or adjust the cream quantity.
- Ensure the butter is at room temperature to get a smooth texture.
- If storing, bring the buttercream back to room temperature and re-whip before using.
- This buttercream is ideal for decorating as it holds its shape well and is not overly sweet.
