Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients:
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Red gel food coloring
- Blue gel food coloring
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for rolling)
Instructions
- Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Baking: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper. Scoop 1 tablespoon of dough, roll into a ball, then roll in granulated sugar followed by powdered sugar. Place on the prepared baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake for 10–12 minutes until the cookies are set but still soft in the center. Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then add vanilla extract. Gradually add the dry ingredients until combined into a soft dough. Divide the dough into three portions: leave one plain, color one with red gel food coloring, and the other with blue gel food coloring. Cover and chill the dough for at least 1 hour.
Notes
- For the best crackle effect, make sure the dough is well chilled before rolling in sugar.
- Gel food coloring works better than liquid to keep the dough consistency.
- These cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
