Description

This Korean Ground Beef Bowl is a quick and flavorful dish perfect for a weeknight dinner. Featuring savory ground beef seasoned with garlic, ginger, and soy sauce, served over steamed rice and topped with an array of traditional Korean garnishes like kimchi, pickled vegetables, and a sunny-side-up egg, it offers a delightful balance of flavors and textures in every bite.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef and Sauce

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 preferred)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated or minced
  • 2 green onions, chopped (save a bit for garnish)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

To Serve

  • 2 cups cooked rice (white, jasmine, or brown rice)
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Sliced cucumbers
  • Kimchi
  • A sunny-side-up egg
  • Pickled carrots or radish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Rice: Start by cooking 2 cups of your choice of rice (white, jasmine, or brown) according to package instructions so it’s ready to serve under the beef mixture.
  2. Cook the Beef Mixture: Heat the sesame oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and chopped green onions and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently.
  3. Season the Beef: Once the beef is mostly cooked, stir in the soy sauce or tamari. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Continue to cook for an additional 2-3 minutes so the flavors meld together well. Remove from heat.
  4. Cook the Egg: In a separate non-stick pan, fry a sunny-side-up egg to your desired doneness, seasoning lightly with salt and pepper.
  5. Assemble the Bowls: Divide the cooked rice evenly between four bowls. Spoon the seasoned ground beef over the rice. Top each bowl with a sunny-side-up egg, sliced cucumbers, a helping of kimchi, pickled carrots or radish, some chopped green onions, and sprinkle with sesame seeds for garnish.
  6. Serve: Serve immediately while warm, encouraging mixing the egg yolk with the beef and rice for a rich, flavorful experience.

Notes

  • Use tamari instead of soy sauce for a gluten-free version.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
  • Adjust the amount of garlic and ginger to suit your taste preferences.
  • Pickled carrots or radish can be homemade or store-bought.
  • For a spicier kick, add gochujang (Korean chili paste) to the beef mixture.
