Glaze:

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup whole milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract


Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast: In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the milk, sugar, salt, egg, shortening, and 1 cup of the flour. Add the yeast mixture and mix until smooth. Gradually add the remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
  3. Rise the dough: Cover and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 to 1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
  4. Shape and fry: Roll out the dough, cut out doughnut shapes, let rise again, then fry in oil until golden brown.
  5. Make the glaze: Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla. Dip the warm doughnuts in the glaze and let set on a wire rack.

Notes

  • For a chocolate glaze, substitute 2 tablespoons of milk with unsweetened cocoa powder.
