Description

These Cheesy Crispy Baked Green Beans are a deliciously crunchy and cheesy vegetable side dish. Fresh green beans are blanched to maintain their vibrant color and tenderness, then baked and broiled with a flavorful blend of panko breadcrumbs, cheddar, jalapeno cheese, and Parmesan for a satisfying crispy topping. Perfect for a quick 15-minute preparation, this dish combines rich buttery garlic flavors with sharp cheeses to give green beans a delightful twist.

Ingredients

Scale

Green Beans

  • 1 pound fresh green beans (washed, trimmed & blanched)

Seasoning & Oil

  • 2 tablespoons good olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt (divided)
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

Crispy Cheese Topping

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 garlic clove (minced)
  • 1/3 cup panko bread crumbs
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup shredded jalapeno pepper cheese (or pepper jack)
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Heat the oven to 400°F and line a large sheet pan with foil. Place the pan in the oven on the middle rack while the oven preheats to ensure it is hot for the green beans.
  2. Blanch Green Beans: Fill a large saucepan with 3 quarts water and 1 teaspoon kosher salt. Bring to a rolling boil. Place green beans in boiling water and cook for 1½ minutes to soften and preserve color. Immediately transfer beans to a bowl of ice water and leave submerged for 5 minutes to stop cooking. Drain and dry the beans thoroughly using paper towels or a clean cloth.
  3. Season Beans: In a large bowl, toss the blanched green beans with olive oil, 1 teaspoon kosher salt, and black pepper to evenly coat.
  4. Start Baking Beans: Carefully remove the hot sheet pan from the oven and spread the seasoned green beans evenly on it. Place the pan back in the oven and bake for 5 minutes to begin roasting.
  5. Prepare Garlic Butter: While beans bake, melt the unsalted butter in the microwave. Stir in the minced garlic to infuse flavor.
  6. Mix Breadcrumb Topping: In a medium bowl, combine panko bread crumbs, garlic butter, shredded cheddar, shredded jalapeno pepper cheese, and grated Parmesan cheese, tossing well to coat.
  7. Add Topping to Beans: Remove the sheet pan from the oven and evenly sprinkle the breadcrumb and cheese mixture over the baked green beans.
  8. Broil for Crispiness: Set the oven to broil and return the pan to the middle rack. Broil the beans until the cheese melts, browns, and the topping becomes crispy, watching carefully to prevent burning (about 2-3 minutes).
  9. Finish and Serve: Remove the pan from the oven and transfer the cheesy crispy green beans to a serving dish.
  10. Serve Immediately: Enjoy these cheesy crispy green beans hot for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Blanching the green beans helps retain their bright green color and tender texture.
  • Watch the beans closely while broiling since breadcrumbs and cheese can burn quickly.
  • You can substitute jalapeno cheese with pepper jack or any spicy cheese you prefer.
  • For a gluten-free variation, replace panko breadcrumbs with gluten-free breadcrumbs.
  • Use fresh green beans for optimal flavor and texture rather than frozen.
