Description

These Cheddar Biscuits are flaky, cheesy, and packed with sharp cheddar flavor. Made with cold butter and buttermilk, they develop tender layers for a perfect side dish or snack. Easy to prepare and bake, these biscuits bring a comforting homemade touch to any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold and cubed)
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk (cold)
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and garlic powder until well combined to evenly distribute the leavening agents and seasoning.
  3. Cut in Butter: Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter to the dry mixture and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter in until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, which creates flaky layers in the biscuits.
  4. Add Cheese: Stir in the shredded sharp cheddar cheese thoroughly to distribute the cheesy flavor throughout the dough.
  5. Add Buttermilk: Pour in the cold buttermilk and gently mix just until the dough comes together, being careful not to overmix to keep the biscuits tender.
  6. Form Dough and Layer: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and pat it into a 1-inch thick rectangle. Fold the dough in half and pat down again; repeat the folding 2 to 3 times to create flaky layers.
  7. Cut Biscuits: Cut the dough into rounds using a biscuit cutter or slice into squares according to your preference.
  8. Bake: Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 12–15 minutes or until golden brown on top.
  9. Brush with Butter and Serve: When the biscuits come out of the oven, brush them with melted butter while still warm to add richness and shine. Serve immediately for best taste.

Notes

  • For an herby twist, add chopped chives or parsley to the dough before baking to increase flavor complexity.
  • These biscuits are best served fresh but can be frozen and reheated for convenience.
