Ingredients
Scale
Beef Marinade
- 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- Pinch of pepper
Stir-Fry Sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce (remaining)
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
Vegetables and Aromatics
- 3 cups broccoli florets
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
Cooking Oils and Garnishes
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
- Sliced green onions for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Marinate the beef: In a medium bowl, combine the thinly sliced flank steak with 1 tablespoon soy sauce, cornstarch, and a pinch of pepper. Mix well and let it marinate for 15 minutes. This helps tenderize the meat and allows the cornstarch to create a light coating that will thicken the sauce later.
- Prepare the stir-fry sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, beef broth, brown sugar, and sesame oil. Set this sauce mixture aside.
- Cook the broccoli: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the broccoli florets and a splash of water to generate steam. Stir-fry for 2 to 3 minutes until the broccoli is crisp-tender but still bright green. Remove broccoli from the skillet and set aside.
- Sear the beef: Add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil to the skillet. Spread the marinated beef in a single layer and cook without stirring for 1 to 2 minutes on one side until browned. Flip the pieces and cook for another 1 to 2 minutes until the beef is just cooked through.
- Add garlic and ginger: Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger into the beef and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant, making sure not to burn the garlic.
- Combine with broccoli and sauce: Return the cooked broccoli to the skillet. Pour the prepared stir-fry sauce over the beef and broccoli, stirring everything together to coat evenly. Cook for an additional 2 minutes until the sauce thickens and the ingredients are well combined.
- Finish and serve: Remove the skillet from heat. Optionally, garnish with toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onions for added flavor and texture. Serve immediately over steamed rice or noodles if desired.
