Ingredients
Scale
Roll Ups
- 6 slices fresh soft sandwich bread (white or wholemeal/wholegrain)
- 6 slices streaky bacon, rind removed
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 large egg
- 2 tbsp milk (full cream or low fat)
- Pinch of salt
Serving
- Nachos Cheese Dip, warmed (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the bread: Cut the crusts off the bread slices, then use a rolling pin to flatten each piece by rolling back and forth 3 or 4 times. Fresh bread will become slightly sticky, making it easier to roll.
- Make the egg mixture: In a bowl large enough for dipping, whisk together the egg, milk, and a pinch of salt until well combined.
- Cook the bacon: Heat a large pan over high heat without oil. Place bacon slices in the pan and sear each side until browned but not crispy to avoid crumbling when rolling.
- Assemble the roll ups: Place one cooked bacon slice in the center of each flattened bread piece. Roll the bread tightly around the bacon, sealing the seam by pressing lightly and placing the seam side down.
- Prepare the pan for frying: Wipe the pan clean, then melt butter over medium heat.
- Dip and seal the roll ups: Dip each roll up into the egg mixture, shaking off excess. Lightly fist the roll and twist it a few times to rub the egg throughout and ensure the seam remains sealed. Repeat for all roll ups.
- Cook the roll ups: Place the roll ups seam side down in the pan. Cook them for 3 to 4 minutes, rotating to brown all sides evenly until golden brown.
- Serve: Remove from the pan and serve immediately with warmed Nachos Cheese Dip if desired.
Notes
- Use fresh, soft sandwich bread for easy rolling and sticking when flattened.
- Avoid cooking bacon until crispy as it may crumble during rolling.
- You can substitute the Nachos Cheese Dip with other dips or syrups as preferred.
- For a healthier option, wholemeal or wholegrain bread can be used.
