- Diced tomatoes (for serving)
- Chopped dill pickles (for serving)
- White onion (sliced thin, for serving)
- Other favorite burger toppings (for serving)
Condiments and Seasonings
- ½ cup water
- 1 cup ketchup (Heinz recommended)
- 2 tablespoons yellow mustard (Heinz or French’s recommended)
- ¼ cup mayonnaise (Hellman’s or Duke’s recommended)
- 1 teaspoon Lowry’s seasoned salt
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
Dough and Garnishes
- 1 8 ounce can Pillsbury refrigerated Crescent Dough Sheet
- 1 egg (beaten)
- 2 teaspoons sesame seed (toasted)
- Canola oil (for brushing skillet)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Skillet: Heat the oven to 375°F and adjust the oven rack to the middle position. Brush the inside bottom and sides of a cast iron skillet generously with canola oil to prevent sticking.
- Cook Ground Beef and Bacon: Brown the ground chuck over medium heat in the cast iron skillet, stirring frequently until fully cooked. Drain excess fat and set the beef aside. Using the same skillet, cook the bacon slices until crisp. Combine the cooked bacon with the beef and set aside.
- Sauté Onion: Add the diced yellow onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 4 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
- Combine Ingredients: Return the cooked beef and bacon to the skillet with the onions. Add water, ketchup, yellow mustard, mayonnaise, seasoned salt, kosher salt, and ground black pepper. Stir thoroughly to combine all ingredients and heat through on medium heat.
- Remove From Heat: Take the skillet off the heat to prepare for assembly.
- Add Cheese Layer: Evenly layer the slices of American cheese over the beef mixture within the skillet.
- Top With Crescent Dough: Unroll the refrigerated crescent dough sheet and press it into a circle large enough to cover the skillet’s contents. Place the dough over the cheese and press gently to the inside edges of the skillet to seal.
- Egg Wash and Seeds: Brush the top of the dough with the beaten egg to promote browning and sprinkle toasted sesame seeds evenly over the crust.
- Bake the Pot Pie: Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake for 25-35 minutes until the crust is deep golden brown and the filling is bubbling around the edges.
- Serve With Toppings: Spoon portions of the pot pie onto plates and serve alongside chopped lettuce, diced tomatoes, chopped dill pickles, sliced white onions, and any other favorite burger toppings to avoid sogginess on the crust.
- Enjoy: Relish the hearty, savory flavors of this delicious bacon cheeseburger pot pie!
Notes
- Using a cast iron skillet helps evenly brown the meat and crisps the bacon perfectly while also allowing for stovetop to oven cooking in the same pan.
- Do not place burger toppings directly on the pot pie before serving, as it will make the crust soggy.
- To toast sesame seeds, place them in a dry skillet over medium heat and stir until golden and fragrant, about 2-3 minutes.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated in the oven to preserve the crust’s crispness.
- Substitute ground chuck with other ground beef blends for different fat contents based on preference.
